McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group

The Shimoda Group teams with John Anderson, Rick McLaughlin and McLaughlin Rincon Ltd., a civil and environmental engineering firm in the design and construction of whitewater recreation facilities which are growing in popularity, across the US and around the world.

The McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group has been responsible for man-made whitewater design projects across the U.S., including the 1996 Olympic slalom course on the Upper Ocoee River.  Our hallmarks are our capability to create venues which

-  meet clients'specific design needs

-  last without the need for maintenance

-  look natural if desired

We have contributed to the design and modeling (utilizing functioning scale models) of rapids even at the sites of dams, adding recreational and aesthetic value to otherwise utilitarian structures.

Three members of the McLaughlin Whitewater Group - our Field Design Consultants - happen to also be world-ranked whitewater freestyle competitors: Jimmy Blakeney,  Jay Kincaid and Tanya Shuman.  Their intimate familiarity with hundreds of rivers, the preferences of world-class athletes and river runners alike, and features of man-made courses around the world provides invaluable input for our engineers.

In addition to its area of expertise, McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group offers comprehensive engineering, design and consulting services on water resources, wastewater treatment, collection and distribution systems, drainage, flood control, water-based recreation, and utility economics.
